"Anticipation, I suppose, sometimes exceeds realization." - Amelia Earhart |
The Morning Hours
Coast guard cutter, Itasca, was out drifting in the Pacific Ocean listening. Leo Bellarts and his radio men hoped to help guide Amelia to the Howland Islands to refuel. They had heard from Amelia but, all of the messages were faint and hard to understand. "Itasca had been sending Earhart the Morse code letter 'A'- another aid to help guide her to the island."-Candace Fleming. Once Amelia's voice became scarce they began to worry. "All they could do was go on sending radio signals... Seconds turned to minutes. Minutes became an hour. But the sky above Howland Island remained empty...Where, they wondered, was Amelia Earhart?"- Candace Fleming.

Mabel's Story
"When Mabel Larremore turned the dial, she suddenly heard Amelia Earhart calling for help."-Candace Fleming. Mabel knew very well that it was Amelia because she had heard her many times before talking in interviews through the radio. Mabel stated, "Her message stated that the plane was down on an uncharted island. It was partially on land, part in water. She gave the latitude and longitude of her location...She also stated that her navigator, Fred Noonan, was seriously injured and needed a doctor. She, too, was hurt, but not badly." Mabel never notified anyone till later because she figured the officials were taking care of it.

Voices in the Night
"Sailors on Howland Island huddled next to their radios. They had been instructed to 'listen continuously' for any signals from Earhart's plane."-Candace Fleming. Islands all around Howland Island were listening to their radios for any sign of Amelia and Fred. The NBC station in Honolulu made a special broadcast out. They received a signal back but, it was too faint to understand.

"This is Amelia Earhart," a voice came from the radio. "Ship is on a reef south of the equator. Station KHAQQ." (Candace Fleming). He jumped up called his father and they both hurried to the police station to report what Dana heard.
